Germany's Electric Vehicle Exports More Than Doubled Year-on-year From January To August This Year

According to the latest data from the German Federal Statistics Office, between January and August 2023, Germany exported 520,000 electric vehicles with a total value of 23.9 billion euros. Compared with the same period last year (255,000 vehicles, worth 12 billion euros), export volumes more than doubled (+103.9%).

In the first eight months, the most important country for German electric vehicle exports was Belgium (73,000 units), followed by the Netherlands (72,000 units) and the United Kingdom (71,000 units), with 5,000 electric vehicles exported to the United States.

"Of the five most popular electric cars in Germany, four are from the Volkswagen Group." Stefan Di Bitonto, an automotive expert at Germany's Federal Trade and Investment Agency, commented. "Volkswagen's electric car strategy seems to be paying off. Germany Electric vehicle models are very popular in much of Europe."

Between January and August 2023, Germany exported 1.1 million traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, worth 42 billion euros. In terms of volume, it increased by 9.7% compared with the same period last year. The most important exporting country is the United States (142,000 vehicles), followed by the United Kingdom (118,000 vehicles) and China (116,000 vehicles).

"This is not surprising. Due to the popularity of German electric vehicles in some Western European countries, the United Kingdom and the United States, the export growth ratio of electric vehicles from January to August 2023 greatly exceeded the export growth ratio of internal combustion vehicles. It has more than doubled in one year," Di Bitonto continued.

"Germany, as a major automobile industry country, is also going full steam ahead in the field of electric vehicles. The significant increase in the export volume of German electric vehicles shows that German cars are as popular as ever around the world. Foreign electric vehicle companies can take advantage of Germany's advantages in the automotive field. With this investment, we can not only have high-quality talents here, but also enjoy high-quality brands made in Germany just like Tesla in Germany."

The German Federal Trade and Investment Agency is the foreign trade and inward investment agency of the German federal government. The agency provides consulting and support to foreign companies entering the German market and assists companies established in Germany to enter foreign markets.
