KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The Malaysian government is exploring the possibility of exempting electric
vehicles (EVs) from local authority parking fees in cities, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga
Kor Ming announced today. This initiative aims to encourage motorists to adopt electric vehicles over
traditional fossil fuel cars.
Minister Nga shared that the ministry is in discussions with local councils to evaluate the feasibility of
this proposal. He cited London's model, where EVs benefit from parking fee exemptions while non-EVs
incur congestion charges, as a potential framework for Malaysia.
Additionally, Minister Nga acknowledged that progress has been slower than anticipated in establishing
10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025, with approximately 3,000 stations currently operational.
This announcement aligns with recent statements from Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who disclosed
plans to reduce road tax for EVs by up to 85% and introduce special "green plates" for easy identification
during emergencies, further supporting Malaysia's EV initiatives.
