German electric car sales improve 29% year-on-year in September

New passenger car registrations in Germany improved 14 per cent year-over-year to 224,816 units in September. Year to date, cumulative new vehicle registrations in Germany are down 7.4 per cent to 1,867,885 units. But electric vehicle sales are up significantly more than overall market performance. They are on track for record levels, with electric vehicle sales expected to hit a new record in the second half of this year.

Electric vehicle registrations in Germany improved by 29% year-on-year to 72,725 units in September, and market share rose to 32.3% from 28.7% a year earlier. Both pure electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales increased. BEV sales improved 32% year-over-year to 44,389 units, with a 19.7% market share, while PHEV sales rose 24% year-over-year to 28,336 units, with a 12.6% market

As of September, cumulative 2022 EV registrations in Germany were 488,120 units, a 2% year-over-year improvement, with a 26.1% market share. Of these, BEV sales improved 15% year-on-year to 272,473 units, with a 14.6% market share, while PHEV sales were down 11% year-on-year to 215,647 units, with an 11.5% market share.
